Forum: Law and Accountability in the Age of WikiLeaks

For several years WikiLeaks was an award-winning site exposing corruption around the world. In 2010, it began revealing sensitive US acts and communications culminating in the release of 250000 State Department cables to major news organizations. These actions caused a great deal of anxiety worldwide. Nine NYU faculty and alumni --experts in the First Amendment, national security, Internet law, and journalism --will discuss what worries them most about WikiLeaks and the responses to it. Our discussion will be an examination of past cases including the Pentagon Papers, to enrich our understanding of the present and future of law in the Internet age. Questions for discussion: Will international diplomacy be hampered by the threat of disclosure? Is WikiLeaks and its ilk journalism? What can the private sector do to protect itself from WikiLeaks? And how should the law regard private sector efforts to hobble WikiLeaks? Panelists: Simon Chesterman, Global Professor of Law, Director, New York University School of Law Singapore Program Norman Dorsen, Frederick I. and Grace A. Stokes Professor of Law, Co-Director, Arthur Garfield Hays Civil Liberties Program Brian Markley, Partner, Cahill Gordon & Reindel Burt Neuborne, Inez Milholland Professor of Civil Liberties, Legal Director, Brennan Center for Justice Samuel Rascoff, Assistant Professor of Law Jay Rosen, Associate Professor of Journalism, New York University, Author, PressThink Katherine Strandburg, Professor of Law Diane ...

NYC Media Lab at NYU Poly Institute Brooklyn New York - CrossTownNews.Com

CROSS TOWN NEWS at www.CrossTownNews.com reports that Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg has launched NYC Media Lab, a new initiative to promote innovation within New York City's media industry. The new laboratory -- a consortium of the New York City Economic Development Corporation, Polytechnic Institute of New York University (NYU-Poly) and Columbia University -- will drive new technology research and connect companies looking to advance new media technologies with local academic institutions undertaking related research. NYC Media Lab builds on models established at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University and is the nation's first "government-supported" laboratory for media innovation. It will be housed within the NYU Polytechnic Institute campus in Downtown Brooklyn. Mayor Bloomberg made the announcement at the Wired "Disruptive by Design" conference held at the Morgan Library and Museum, where he was joined by New York City Economic Development Corporation President Seth W. Pinsky, NYU-Poly Provost Dianne Reko, Columbia University Vice President for Intellectual Property & Technology Transfer Orin Hersk-o-vitz, and AOL Chairman and CEO Tim Armstrong, an advisor to the City's MediaNYC 2020 initiative.
