What is Sharepoint and Sharepoint Server

Microsoft SharePoint is a family of software products developed by Microsoft for collaboration, file sharing and web publishing. This family of products include: Microsoft SharePoint Server, Microsoft SharePoint Foundation, Microsoft Search Server, Microsoft SharePoint Designer and Microsoft SharePoint Workspace.

A SharePoint Server is a server manufactured by the Microsoft Corporation. Microsoft SharePoint 2010 makes it easier for people to work together. Using SharePoint 2010, organisation people can set up Web sites to share information with others, manage documents from start to finish, and publish reports to help everyone make better decisions.

SharePoint Server works with Microsoft IIS web server to produce sites intended for collaboration, file sharing, social networking and web publishing. SharePoint server farms can host web sites, portals, intranets, extranets, Internets, web content management systems, search engine, wikis, blogs, social networking, business intelligence, workflow as well as providing a framework for web application development.

Why Use SharePoint?

* To make company quickly respond to changing business needs.

* people in organisation can share ideas and expertise fastly

* find correct business information  to make better decisions.

* Find appropriate people with expertise and talent to execute these decisions.

* Helps to cut training and maintenance costs by circulating multimedia training sessions.

* Saves time and effort

* Scalable platform

SharePoint 2010 capabilities

Following are some hightlighted capabilities of Sharepoint Server

Sites

SharePoint 2010 Sites provides a single infrastructure for all organisation’s business Web sites. Share documents with colleagues, manage projects with partners, and publish information to customers. SharePoint sites are, functionally, ASP.NET 2.0 web applications that are served using IIS and a SQL Server database as a data storage back end. SharePoint can be used to create sites from Internet to extranet sites through, Intranet Portals, blogs, wikis, to team sites. Provides Web Edit, allowing easy customization of the sites. Sites enables users to obtain access to a personalized view of the information that's relevant to them. Sites has a Public view and a Private view. Users are able to determine the permissions on various pieces of information that are in a Site and select whether their colleagues, manager, or everyone in the organization can see each piece of information.

Composites

Build no-code solutions to rapidly respond to business needs by using SharePoint 2010 Composites which offers tools and components for creating do-it-yourself business solutions. Composites are intended to accelerate the process of solution production through easy to use WYSWYG tools. Composites allow users to create solutions to business problems in graphic tools without having to create or compile code by hand. Composites will allow users to share their solutions with other users on the SharePoint Server farm.

Insights

Insights provide the business intelligence for taking appropriate actions in a fast pace environment. When a user works through the Web portal in SharePoint, searching for information is fast. The organization's IT administration can determine what kind of business critical information is available to each user according to the user's profile and role.

Communities

SharePoint 2010 Communities delivers great collaboration tools and a single platform to manage them. Make it easy for people to share ideas and work together the way they want.  Workers in the organization achieve results through collaborative projects. They interact about work on common electronic sheets, including documents, task lists, schedules, wikis and blogs. Work teams can also manage workflow by building the SharePoint Server to fit the internal business processes.

Content

SharePoint 2010 Content makes content management easy. Set up compliance measures ”behind the scenes”—with features like document types, retention polices, and automatic content sorting—and then let people work naturally in Microsoft Office. Content management shifts  the organization works with many types of content, such as documents, computer files, audio, video, Web pages and graphics. Results in  paper less document management with   fast information transmission, good collaboration among employees.

Search

SharePoint 2010 Search allows to find accurate information  from cluttered stack of information. Gives relevant, latest information from bulk data. Also allows to find the right persons for a task easily.

User Interface

While SharePoint users can access SharePoint functionality through multiple methods, the primary user interface is a web-based application accessed through a browser. The majority of SharePoint's functionality is supported across all major desktop web browsers - however, some minor features are restricted to the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer 8. Notably, Internet Explorer 6 is not supported.

SharePoint can also be accessed through: a Windows-based synchronised desktop client, Windows 7 Federated Search, WebDAV "Internet folders" (i.e. via Windows Explorer), Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Office 2010, and other third party applications.

Architecture

1) Good architecture around microsoft dot net platform and sharepoint foundation SDK

Microsoft SharePoint Server is composed of three major tiers:

    * Web Front End role which processes HTTP requests to the Server;

    * An application layer which provides such features as Search and Excel Services;

    * A dedicated Microsoft SQL Server data storage.

2) Frequent updates and security fixes.

3) SharePoint comes in several forms. Microsoft explains that SharePoint Server provides the technology while Windows SharePoint Services provides the platform. One can buy SharePoint Designer 2007 to customize websites to meet their needs.

Related Technologies

Microsoft Search Server

Microsoft Search Server, an enterprise search platform, builds on the search capabilities of Microsoft SharePoint Server. MOSS search provides the ability to search metadata attached to documents. A free version, Search Server 2008 Express, is also available. The Express edition features the same feature-set as the commercial edition, including no limitation on the number of files indexed. However, the free version is limited to a stand-alone installation and cannot be scaled out to a cluster.

Microsoft SharePoint Foundation

It is a free SDK for developing applications around Sharepoint environment based on dotnet platform.

SharePoint Farm

A group of SharePoint Servers can be joined in to a server farm. Different servers can be provided different roles, or sets of roles can be shared by a single server or servers in the farm. For example in SharePoint 2010 one or more servers can be dedicated to crawling content to create the search index. All servers in a farm are joined by sharing a common instance of SQL Server.

Microsoft SharePoint Designer

Microsoft SharePoint Designer is a specialized web page editor for designing SharePoint sites and end-user workflows for SharePoint Server and SharePoint Foundation sites. SharePoint Designer also allows developers to manipulate data from SharePoint or external sources (such as Microsoft SQL Server) without coding directly against the .NET Framework.

Awards

In 2008, the Gartner Group put SharePoint in the "leaders" quadrant in three of its Magic Quadrants (for Search, Portals, and enterprise content management).

Limitations

Runs only on Microsoft Windows Servers and requires Asp.Net installed.

Current SharePoint 2010 was developed on ASP.NET 3.5 and is not compatible with latest version ASP.NET ie. version4.

SharePoint can only work with Microsoft SQL Server

Widely used web browser IE6 not supported.

Criticisms

lack of well-integrated tools for developers. In latest Visual Studio 2010, microsoft has put efforts to solve it.

Complex customized software architecture that differs significantly from those of other ASP.NET-based web applications

Microsoft Office 2007 Home & Student - Free Download

Free download : jafiles.net Microsoft Office 2007 (officially called 2007 Microsoft Office System) is a Windows version of the Microsoft Office System, Microsoft's productivity suite. Formerly known as Office 12 in the initial stages of its beta cycle, it was released to volume license customers on November 30, 2006 and made available to retail customers on January 30, 2007. These are, respectively, the same dates Windows Vista was released to volume licensing and retail customers. Office 2007 contains a number of new features, the most notable of which is the entirely new graphical user interface called the Fluent User Interface (initially referred to as the Ribbon User Interface), replacing the menus and toolbars -- which have been the cornerstone of Office since its inception -- with a tabbed toolbar, known as the Ribbon. Office 2007 requires Windows XP with Service Pack 2 or higher, Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 or higher, Windows Vista or Windows 7. Office 2007 is the last version of Microsoft Office which is officially supported on Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. The 'Ribbon User Interface' is a task-oriented Graphical User Interface (GUI). It features a central menu button, widely known as the 'Office Button'. The Ribbon Interface has been improved in Microsoft Office 2010. Office 2007 also includes new applications and server-side tools. Chief among these is Groove, a collaboration and communication suite for smaller businesses, which was originally ...

Specifically, they wanted to know if SharePoint was an appropriate social platform for the Internet. In this episode of Michael on the Go I address the question of SharePoint As An Internet Social Platform. I discuss some of the features that make SharePoint a great choice for rendering an interactive social presence. Then I show an example of a lively, interactive, engaging social site built on SharePoint.
